“My name is Jose Miguel Vasquez but you can call me SuperDad…or at least that’s what my wife and 3 kids call me, every once in a while. This kind of reassurance fuels me, especially on the days when I struggle to feel “Super.”
Whether I’m driving to and from the kids’ activities or cooking or preparing lines for an audition, these four beautiful people are my pillars. When we sit at our dinning table I see in their eyes the faith and joy of watching me live the dream. A dream I originally gave up for them right after graduating college. I gave up acting because that’s what a responsible young dad, whose very afraid, with strong South American upbringing is supposed to do right? Yet, they stood by me as I shook off the misery of a mediocre life and the grace of God placed that dream back in my hands.
Today they witness first hand as I’m deliciously entrenched in my field, adding to my acting resume, preparing lines, self-taping, driving to auditions, teaching, coaching, not booking and booking roles on commercials, tv shows and major motion pictures. If you ask them about me, they’d say, I’m determined, disciplined, ready to respond of course; any good business person has to be. But they may also mention how silly I can be breaking out into random dances; in which they often join in on. We know now these semi-synchronized dances are more enjoyable if we’re goofing off by each others side.
And if we’re quick on our feet my wife and I will record said dances into the funkiest youtube videos or Instagram post.
If given the chance I’ll happily lead the family on uncharted adventures, simple off track explorations of a new trail for a refreshing hike, or unscheduled visits to the Gulf coast after a callback.
Succeeding as a daddy and husband means holding their hands, showing up and edifying them with loving, sometimes firm words. Balancing this with a rockin’, laser sharp focused, life of a working actor is a beautiful puzzle I love getting better at everyday. Sometimes this brings me to tears, with the happy ones out weighing the sad ones. Naturally the hustle of it all tends to stager and exhaust me at times. So, I easily embrace the moments of silence and stillness to realize where I’ve been, where I’m headed, but mostly where I am right now…and right now is more than enough for peace, to refuel, to press on.”
An even shorter version of what I’m about: Ready, set…go!
