Some general thoughts for Actors and Directors working together. Then again, anyone in a relationship can learn a bit from this.
When creating along side your fellow artist you should bring 100% of yourself. Once a story is decided upon you look at the details, the essential elements necessary to reach the audience.
Collaboration brings to mind four keys to any successful relationship.
In order for a project to work you need:
Ridiculously awesome communication–
Better to say too much, than not enough.
Great Listening skills-
Shut your mouth and your mind so that the idea of the fellow or lady speaking can actually strike a creative reaction from you.
A Proactive attitude-
Have your ideas ready so that when asked, you have a “sample platter” of ideas ready to knock their socks off.
Execute together- ( this one is a bit metaphoric, but I think you’ll get it)
Start the race to the finish holding hands (figuratively of course!) Go ahead without them only if they agree its best. Make sure they know you’ll be looking out for them, the whole way, and waiting at the finish line, cheering them on. Go full on, as discussed, and if something occurs in the moment to make the story better, own it and bring it to life.
Keep in mind the simple and still effective golden rule, “treat others the way you want to be treated,”
Creating alongside other artists feels amazing when you can walk away at the end saying we gave it our all. “I held nothing back, I gave you my all.”
Make magic today by giving of yourself.
Check out this massive undertaking on Collaboration. The project is an international film called “The Owner” and its has been screened all over the world. Look out for a Central Florida premiere.
Have a bountiful day and Godspeed my friends!
